In my never-ending quest to find the best, most affordable, most easily found beauty products on the market, I hit up one of my favorite stores of all time: Target.

I realize Target isn’t the first store you think of when you hear “self-care” or “better-for-you beauty,” but trust me when I say there are gems to be found if you just know what to look for. (And no, they did not pay me to write this.) As someone who cannot walk into a Target without spending too much money on things I don’t need, discovering natural goodies was a pleasant surprise.

Now when I enter the big-box paradise, I’ll have the willpower to skip the industrial-sized vat of kettle corn in favor of these eight self-care products that not only will I actually use but are much better for my body than the soft-serve in the food court.

As someone with fair skin, semi-light hair, and hazel eyes, I always find black mascara a bit too harsh. Let’s Talk About “IT”

Tender conversations are tough, especially with the ones closest to you. As we both know conversations that prepare and plan can be most valuable in the long run. So let’s talk about “it”—what are your senior loved ones’ desires when it comes to staying at home or moving to a senior community?

Aging safely in place is the main goal but it comes at a cost and needs to be planned for. Your loved one may want to adapt the house, have in-home help, or whatever else it might take to stay in their home. With that being said, let’s discuss the cost of in home care, possible stair lifts, ramps outside the home, safety features in the bathroom, etc.

Moving to a senior community with safety features already in place is ideal, but leaving the home and moving requires forethought. Several discussions will have to take place: how can we downsize? How will we live in community with others? Does your loved one feel they have lost their independence?

Consulting with a geriatric care manager like myself can be helpful in guiding you through the process of understanding what is needed to assist the older adults in your family. Of course we know they may desire the impossible or a not-so-feasible living situation—this is where I can help guide and direct as a neutral, detached party who has the knowledge and experience to see it this through the lens with clarity and direction.

I am here–Bridging the gap of care for those facing the reality of aging.

6 Phrases To Invite Grace & Gratitude

When we think of change, we usually picture difficult, life-altering moments. Naturally, we begin to associate change with fear and challenge.

But lately I’ve been thinking about how even positive changes — the ones we’ve dreamed about, waited for, and worked for — can cause similar anxiety. Even when we know life is changing in a positive direction, the transition can still induce panic.

Change will happen whether we want it to or not. But we can choose how to handle it.

A little bit of anxiety is natural. But when the angst turns to fear or distress, that’s not healthy. That’s our body’s way of asking us to be mindful, and signaling us to hit our inner reset button.

The truth is, we encounter small changes every day and often handle them without hesitation. We can even juggle several changes at once — we’re that good! When it comes to bigger changes, we need to trust our abilities, sensibilities, and judgments more.

These mantras have helped me stay excited about the positive changes that lay ahead — I hope they can help you too!

1. To release emotions not serving you: “I release my fear about this change.”

2. To help transition into the future smoothly: “I ease into my future with grace and acceptance.”

3. To help alleviate any anxiety: “I trust that all is happening as it should.”

4. To keep faith in your own choices: “I trust my decisions and have faith in where I’m going.”

5. To remain in a positive state: “I choose to let love be a part of this change.”

6. To maintain gratitude: “I flow into my future with a thankful and loving spirit.”

Life is always changing, pushing us beyond our comfortable boundaries, and asking us to adjust and reach for something more. We can choose to move through change with grace.

Empathy: Why It’s Important & 6 Ways to Increase It

Empathy is the ability to understand and feel sensitivity toward the feelings of others. Many of us may make lighthearted, Clinton-esque I-feel-your-pain jokes, but really, if you’re an empathetic person, this is exactly what you do: understand someone else’s feelings. Empathy is a huge contributor toward the success of individual relationships. Additionally, some experts believe that the ability to feel empathy is one of the most important skills in the business world today.

Exhibiting empathy toward coworkers, clients, family members, and essentially every individual with whom you come in contact makes you see the world through the eyes of others and understand that your view of a particular situation may not be everyone else’s view. More than that, though, practicing empathy makes you a better communicator, reduces your prejudices, improves your overall well being, and earns you a reputation as a good person to do business with.

Of course, being empathetic takes some patience and some practice. How can you boost your ability to empathize? Here are five approaches to try.

1. Put yourself in their shoes. It can be hard to understand the motives and behaviors of others, but that’s because you’re looking at them from a very specific point of view: your own. Instead, as the old saying goes, turn the tables, put yourself in their shoes, and see if you can make a bit more sense out of the other person’s logic. Doing so can take you from “why” to “aha.”

The 7 Habits of Mentally Resilient People

Many people in the business world have read Stephen Covey’s life-altering book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People — or they’re at least familiar with the principles explained within. You’ve surely heard many of the big ones: begin with the end in mind, seek to understand, and of course, synergize. We’ve all had time to reflect on how to be more effective at work, but what about improving our mental resilience? Our cerebral toughness? Our — to use a bit of vernacular — grit? How can we maintain and even improve our character and resolve when we’re faced with difficult situations?

It certainly isn’t easy. However, just as we made efforts to improve our effectiveness and success by looking at the habits of people who embody those characteristics, we can boost our resilience by taking note of the habits of highly resilient people. Covey may not have penned a sequel to his best seller entitled The 7 Habits of Highly Resilient People, but not to worry — we’ve got you covered. Here are seven things that highly resilient people do regularly, all of which you can do to boost your mental toughness and increase your success.

1. They maintain their cool. We’re emotional creatures, and as such, it’s easy to let emotions get the best of us. However, losing your cool expends your mental resources and allows control of situations to slip away from you. To prove your grit and keep your resilience, maintain control of your emotions and, by extension, your given predicament.

2. They recognize that some things are beyond their control. We’re all familiar with the first part of the Serenity Prayer: “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.” As much as we’d love to have control over every aspect of our lives, we simply have to understand that some things are not under our power. The behavior of other people, the weather, global politics — these are all good examples. Instead, focus on the things that you can control: your demeanor, your actions, and your ability to relate to others.

Poles from the Chicago suburbs discovered Coldbrook Farm near Momence, Ill., with berries like what they picked in their first country. A harvest story will appear in the September 1 edition of Polish American Journal.

Call ahead to reserve a spot to pick and to order pre-picked berries, frozen berries and dried berries. U-pick berries are $3.00/lb and pre-picked berries cost $5.00/lb. Frozen berries, which are available all year, are $6.00/lb. Dried sweetened berries are $5 for a 5 oz. package.

What does your hair say about you? The message your style is sending.

As anyone who’s gotten a really good — or bad — haircut knows, hair is so much more than just a look: It can be a reflection and reinforcement of who you are.

And sometimes your hair speaks for you, even when you don’t say a thing. Have a long, curly, blonde mane? The world’s going to see you differently than someone with a straight, ombré coif.

“It’s intensely personal, but it’s also totally public,” says Rose Weitz, a women and gender studies professor at Arizona State University, of the relationship between hair and perception. “And [hair is] malleable; we can change it so easily in ways that we can’t change any other part of our body. It becomes a reflection of who that person is, and a sign of our identity.”

WHAT IS A DISCONNECTED HAIRCUT?

The next time you’re feeling particularly edgy, why not consider getting a disconnected haircut? A disconnected cut can be short, long, or a combination thereof, and can vary in shape — but its distinguishing characteristic is the step (or steps) in extreme lengths that occur within the style.

It’s almost like two cuts (or more) in one, since the different lengths are not blended together. Because of this, disconnected cuts also typically have lots of texture and movement. Hairstylists often use disconnection to show off a certain element of the haircut or to highlight a cool color. Are you feeling bold?

Put silicone muffin liners in your cup holders. Crumbs and stickiness will become a thing of the past (at least as far as your cup holders are concerned)

Keurig coffee machines can make instant oatmeal, ramen, or anything else that just needs hot water.

Hide your spare key in a medicine bottle with a piece of a pinecone glued to the end. Then bury it.
